Tasik Kenyir

Tasik Kenyir is the largest man-made lake in Southeast Asia, spanning 260,000 hectares. It is also Malaysia's largest rock filled hydroelectric dam. When the area was flooded, most of the hills were above the water level, thus creating about 340 man-made islands. The rainforest that cradles the area bestows the lake with an incredible assortment of flora and fauna including rare ferns, exotic orchids, hornbills, elephants, and panthers. It is believed that the area is the home for more than 8,000 species of flowers, 2,500 species of plants and trees, 800 species of orchids, and 300 species of fungus. Tasik Kenyir is located about 55 km inland of Kuala Terengganu and is the largest man-made lake in the world. Spanning over 260,000 hectares, it is a popular destination for nature lovers as it is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest. Upon the completion of hydroelectric dam, the water level rises creating 340 islands, more than 14 lovely waterfalls and a few rapids and rivers. Pengkalan Gawi jetty has boat services for island trips and resort transfers. Tasik Kenyir is also a gateway to Taman Negara through Tanjung Mentong. It is also an angler’s haven as the lake is home to hundreds of species of freshwater fish like Baung, Toman, Kelisa, Lampam and Kelah. Accommodation varies from a 3 star resort, chalets on the islands, floating resort or houseboats where rooms and meals are provided. The houseboat travels to waterfalls and fishing sites proving an exhilarating adventure for nature lovers.

Kenyir Lake is approximately 55 km from Kuala Terengganu. Gawi Jetty is the main gateway to the lake beside Pengkalan Utama. It is completed with Tourist Information Centre and Wildlife Department and a parking place for most of the houseboats. By Car There are several alternatives to access to Kenyir Lake. If you travel in car from Kuala Lumpur, head to Ajil through Karak Highway to Jerengau-Jabor Highway then onwards to Kenyir. Another alternative will be taking the coastal road through Kemaman, Dungun, Kuala Terengganu and then Kenyir Lake. By Bus There is one direct bus Kenyir Express departs daily from Kuala Lumpur to Gawi Jetty. Bus leaves Hentian Putra at 8.00pm and fare costs RM 25.00. By Taxi Taxi services are available from the airport in Kuala Terengganu direct to Gawi Jetty. The journey takes approximately 45 minutes. By Air Choose and Takes whatever that suit your pocket by going with the Malaysian Airline or the Air Asia. Both operates regulars flights to Sultan Mahmud Airports in Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Then from Sultan Mahmud Airport go take a Taxi straight to Tasik Kenyir which is only RM 60.00 while to Kuala Berang will cost you about RM30.00 By Boat It is close to not possible to enjoy the tranquil scenery and atmosphere of the lake without a boat. There are a number of boat operators parking their fibre glass boats as well as double decks houseboat at Gawi Jetty. Prior booking is advisable. Gunung Tebu merupakan sebuah gunung yang terdapat di Negeri Terengganu, Malaysia. Gunung Tebu mempunyai ketinggian 3401 kaki dan Gunung Tebu mempunyai kawasan hutan Dipterokarp Bukit dan hutan Dipterokarp Atas. Dengan berlatarbelakangkan Laut China Selatan, keindahan Pulau Perhentian dapat dilihat dari Puncak Gunung Tebu jika tidak berkabus tebal.

Keunikan Gunung Tebu ialah di Puncaknya terdapat sebuah kubur dan tempat yang menjadi pilihan pesilat-pesilat untuk bertapa. Lokasi Gunung Tebu terletak di Hutan Lipur Lata Belatan iaitu 24 km dari Pekan Jertih melalui Jalanraya Kuala Terengganu-Jertih, 118 km dari Kuala Terengganu. Untuk sampai ke hutan lipur ini pengunjung boleh menggunakan kenderaan sendiri atau teksi dari Bandar Permaisuri atau Pekan Jertih. Dari pekan jertih, kita terus menuju ke Kampung Jabi untuk ke Hutan Lipur Belatan.

Hutan Lipur Lata Belatan, adalah starting point untuk mendaki gunung Tebu. Di sini terdapat resort dan pondok Jabatan Hutan. Setiap pendaki perlu mendaftarkan diri di pondok berkenaan sebelum memulakan pendakian. Setiap orang dikenakan bayaran sebaynyak RM5 sebagai permit mendaki.

Di sini juga para pengunjung boleh melakukan pelbagai aktiviti seperti berkhemah, bersiar-siar dan trekking. Antara kemudahan lain yang disediakan ialah gerai-gerai, astaka serta dilengkapi dengan kemudahan elektrik.

Angling

Angling With its abundance of fish - both freshwater and sea varieties - Terengganu has often been referred to as an "angler's paradise". From deep-sea game fishing to the tranquil waters of Kenyir Lake, the rivers and the long stretches of coastline, it is no wonder that the largely unpolluted waters have brought forth, such game. At Kenyir Lake especially, the abundance of nutrients and its cleanliness has led to the breeding of fresh water species such as Lampam, Baung, Kelisa and Toman.

Trekking

Trekking Lake Kenyir (The biggest man-made lake in South East Asia), Lata Chemerung-Pasir Raja (The Highest Waterfall in Malaysia), Sekayu Waterfall and Gunung Tebu cater to happy trekkers from beginners to advanced level. Inhale and absorb the wisdom of old rainforests and the coolness of the jungle air. Take the mountainous climb up Gunung Tebu (3401') or Gunung Berembun (3405'), catch the streams and rapids of Pasir Raja, have a swim at Sekayu and Chemerong, or just have a good old picnic and an afternoon snooze in nature's midst. The islands are not just for snorkeling and diving - trek, climb, slip, slide and run up and down a whole range of gradients. Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Redang, Pulau Tenggol and Pulau Kapas are recommended for keen trekkers.

Diving and Snorkeling

Diving and Snorkeling Diving and snorkeling are best pursued when the rainy season is not around. Between the months of March and September, the waters off the coast of Terengganu and around the islands boast of an astounding clarity. An endless parade of multi-hued marine life from anemones, corals and urchins to turtles, rays, sharks and a stunning variety of tropical fish reward divers. Wary snorkelers can enjoy clear water in the warm security of shallow reefs if they are too nervous to venture into deeper water.

Cave Exploration

Cave Exploration Terengganu is not a state to visit without a pair of reliable walking shoes and casual outdoorsy attire. Equipped with the basic caving necessities - namely torchlight, some rope and shoes with a good grip - brace you for yet another adventure. Gua Bewah is a popular cave as is the Kenyir caves. For less enthusiastic cavers, Bukit Keluang by the sea is an ideal site for some casual exploration as its caves are easily reached via walkways. Please note, it is not advisable for ANYONE to enter a cave without a guide or at least a good knowledge of caving as many caves within Malaysia still have to be mapped and if you get lost it's basically your own problem so DO TAKE CARE and be SENSIBLE.

Canoeing

Canoeing With over 300 islands to visit and 369 sq. km of water to glide over, the fascinating Kenyir lake is a canoeist's paradise or go to the Sungai Terengganu, the state's largest river for a bit of sightseeing. Sea canoeing is also available at most of the main islands off the coast. Another good spot is from Pasir Raja to Kuala Dungun, though its better if you are experienced or at least have company on this rather long 'leg'.
